Less than Car Load, a service and rate for small shipment, typically less than 3 or 4 tons. Railroads would collect small shipments at local freight stations. The freight would be loaded into boxcars and taken to larger freight stations at central hubs, sorted and sent to another hub or a local freight station where it would be delivered and picked up by the consignee.
