Camelback

A type of locomotive without a deck plate.  They generally have a Wooten firebox.  The Wooten firebox was invented by the CMO for the P&R railroad as a wide firebox to burn coal “culm”, an anthracite coal mining waste product.    A Wooten firebox is a wide shallow firebox.  Originally the cab sat on top of the Wooten firebox.  The P&R sent a Wooten firebox engine to Italy to demonstrate the design, however it was too tall it fit through the tunnels with the cab on top of the firebox, so the crew moved the cab ahead of the firebox and set it on the running boards.  It is often stated that camelbacks were banned by the ICC, however there is no evidence to indicate they were actually banned.
