Car Tickets

In the late 1800’s, before standardized waybills were developed, waybills were generally large pieces of paper. To give the conductors something easier to carry and handle, the railroads used “memorandum waybills”, printed on cardstock that the conductors carried. On the P&R those were called “car tickets”. They form the basis for my car card and waybill system.

I have found two sizes of car tickets, a smaller 3×5 size (shown above) and a larger 4×8 size. Here is another of the smaller size car tickets:

Here are are some of the larger size car tickets for the P&R. They used a manila cardstock for the loaded cars and a blue cardstock for empty waybills.

Car tickets (or memorandum waybills) were not just used by the P&R, here are a couple examples of B&M car tickets.

I revised an existing MS Access database app I had written to produce conventional CC&WB to produce ones closer in format to the car tickets, which was easy since they have basically the same info as a CC&WB. To make the waybills look more prototypical, I had to make the pocket on the car card shallower, which meant that I couldn’t use 4 move waybills. All of my waybills are single or double move waybills. I originally tried using the blue waybills for empty cars, but it looked funny with the manila colored car cards and when I added the colored stripe on the blocking route, it meant the blue empty waybills were out.
